Rauma is located on the Gulf of Botnia and is one of the oldest ports in Finland. Built around a Franciscan monastery and home to the mid-15th century Church of the Holy Cross, the town is an outstanding example of an ancient Nordic town built from wood. Although it was devastated by fire in the late 17th century, it has retained its ancient architectural heritage.

The old town of Rauma (Vanha Rauma) is the largest contiguous wooden house complex in the Nordic countries with 600 houses on an area of 28 hectares. The houses, all of which have historical names, sometimes have richly decorated facades. The crooked floor plan goes back to the Middle Ages. While other areas of wooden houses in Finland mostly fell victim to fires, the old town of Rauma has been spared from fires since 1682 and is therefore exceptionally well preserved. In 1991 it was therefore included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
