Oslo is nicknamed Tigerstaden ("Tiger City"), a name familiar to most Norwegians.
The poem "Sidste Sang" from 1870 describes the fight between a horse and a tiger; the tiger represents the dangerous city and the horse the safe life of the countryside.

This 4.5-meter bronze tiger sculpture, created by Elena Engelsen, was gifted to Oslo in 2000 to commemorate the city's 1000th anniversary and stands as one of the most photographed landmarks at Oslo Central Station. The tiger represents Oslo's nickname "Tigerstaden" (The Tiger City), which originated from Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's 1870 poem "Sidste Sang" that depicted a tiger symbolizing the dangerous city versus a horse representing the safe countryside. While the nickname once carried negative connotations about urban dangers, it has evolved to represent Oslo as an exciting and dynamic place.
