As early as 1674, the Swedish King Charles XI offered to build a church. The residents of Sodankylä and Sodankylä rejected this at the time.

Eleven years later, the Sami villages of Sodankylä, Sompio and Kittilä applied to Johan Tuderus, the parish priest of Kemi, to ask the king to establish a parish in Sodankylä. Because of Sodankylä's remoteness, the preparations took two years. King Charles XI finally granted 900 copper thalers from his own coffers on September 23, 1688.
