When Isla Floreana became a hotspot for English whaling ships, the crews also used the island as a post office. In today's so-called Post Office Bay, a large barrel was set up, in which the arriving ships from Europe threw letters to the home. Returning ships emptied the keg and took the letters with them for further transport to Europe. Although there are no more whalers in Floreana today, the tradition has been preserved. There is still a post barrel, but now it is used by tourists in the same way as before.
