Since 2008, three personalities have come to Schinkelplatz, which was the location of the GDR's foreign ministry in the years 1964-1996, and have decisively shaped Berlin's urban history: Thaer, Beuth and Schinkel. The height of the fountain in the fountain is controlled depending on the wind.

The monument was created by Friedrich Drake and erected on November 15, 1869 in the middle of the building academy. In GDR times it was dismantled in 1962 together with the Thaers and Beuth memorials because the GDR Foreign Ministry was to be built on this site. In 1987, the monuments and numerous other sculptures were erected in the Lustgarten for the 750th anniversary of Berlin as part of an exhibition by the State Museums. After reunification and the demolition of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Schinkel monument was re-erected at the old location.
