This ford is thought to have existed in some form or another since prehistoric times. Stepping stones were first recorded in 1841 and the ones you walk across now were dedicated by the UK Prime Minister after the previous set were destroyed during the Second World War to obstruct potential invaders.

The stepping stones are great fun. In summer, children play in the river. After heavy rain, rising water makes the crossing impassable. However, there is a bridge further down.
Interesting fact, the stones were removed during the WWII to prevent an invading force from getting to London. The river is about 800mm deep.

Embark on the Box Hill, Mickleham Downs & Denbies Vineyard loop from Dorking, a difficult hike spanning 11.7 miles (18.9 km) with a significant 1489 feet (454 metres) of elevation gain. This demanding route, taking around 5 hours and 27 minutes, leads you through varied terrain, from ancient box woodland to open vineyards. You will encounter steep climbs, including 275 steps to the top of Box Hill, and enjoy expansive views of the Surrey Hills and the North Downs from Salomons Memorial. The trail offers a mix of established paths, footpaths, and sections of street, with surfaces ranging from natural earth to asphalt. You will also navigate the River Mole, often via its iconic stepping stones.

Prepare for a strenuous hike; good fitness is essential due to the significant elevation changes and steep sections. Wear suitable footwear with good grip, as conditions can be muddy, and surfaces vary. If the stepping stones are submerged after heavy rain, a bridge is available downstream for crossing the River Mole. This popular trail is often cited as one of the top hikes near London, so consider starting early to enjoy a quieter experience.

This loop is renowned for its diverse scenery, passing through England's largest vineyard, Denbies Wine Estate, which covers 265 acres. You will also explore Mickleham Downs, an area with historical significance where Winston Churchill reportedly used the common as a landing strip during WWII. The route also features the Grade II listed Norman Church of St Michael and All Angels, dating back to the 950s. The area is rich in wildlife, including the Adonis blue butterfly and bee orchid.

Embark on the Box Hill & the Stepping Stones loop from Westhumble, an easy 2.7-mile (4.4 km) hike that offers varied terrain and rewarding views. While rated easy, be prepared for a total elevation gain of 491 feet (150 metres) and a steep descent of 275 steps down to the River Mole, which can make the 1 hour and 21 minutes feel more moderate. From Salomons Memorial Viewpoint, you can enjoy panoramic vistas across the landscape, sometimes reaching the South Downs on a clear day, before traversing yew woods and passing through Burford Meadow.

When you plan your visit, remember that the trail includes dirt paths, grassy sections, and potentially muddy areas, especially after rain, so suitable footwear is highly recommended. The 275 steps down to the River Mole can be strenuous on your knees. If the iconic Stepping Stones are busy or the river is in flood, a footbridge is available for crossing. You will also find a café at the top of Box Hill, providing a convenient stop for refreshments.

This route is rich in unique features and history, making it a notable hike in the region. The 17 hexagonal Stepping Stones across the River Mole are an iconic landmark, with a history stretching back to prehistoric times. You will also pass Box Hill Fort, one of the oldest buildings in the area, and traverse parts of the longer North Downs Way. The area is also recognized for its role in the 2012 Olympics road cycling event, specifically the "the Zig Zag Road".
