The memorial for the poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) was erected in May 1982 at the southern end of the Rathausmarkt. It was created on the initiative of the Heine Society and the writer Arie Goral. In 1977 it was commissioned by the Worpswede sculptor Waldemar Otto (1929-2020) and financed both from public donations and from around 3000 citizens of the Hanseatic city.
