Shortly after 1430, a chapel and guest house were built on the spot where the Groot Tuighuis now stands for pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostela. This confraternity chapel was extended in the 16th century into a three-aisled nave with a single-aisled choir. From 1569 it was a parish church. After 1629 the building was expropriated and subsequently served as a Protestant church, carriage house and horse stable. In 1752 it was converted into a military arsenal. Three storage lofts for, among other things, weaponry were made and it was called Groot Tuighuis in the 19th century.
