Designed by Gerolamo Quadrio, proto-architect of the Milan Cathedral, the church was elevated to the rank of Basilica Minore in 1923, on the occasion of the commemoration of its foundation (1023).
The funding for the total reconstruction came from a huge inheritance. On March 13, 1656, the rich merchant Nicolò Valle died, leaving the Fabbriceria San Martino heir to his patrimony of 70,000 gold scudi.

Vandring
The central nave was covered by a barrel vault grafted onto the white marble columns of the base, in a composite style. The two aisles were covered with sails, stuccoed in correspondence with the ribs, in harmony with the sculptural decoration of the "ribbon" of the central nave, the work of Giovan Angelo Sala (executed between 1659 and 1670).
