If you're walking or cycling from Winchester to Eastbourne you'll start or finish here depending if you're going east or west bound. The official marker is unfortunately behind the gate of the National Trust’s Winchester City Mill. That means you can only 'touch it' during their opening hours.

Starting in the iconic cathedral city of Winchester, the official start of the South Downs Route is at the Winchester City Mill, where maps and additional information can be found. Keep an eye out for otters in and around the mill.
