The artist chose the Hourglass, symbol of the measurement of time which passes by analogy with the evacuation by sea and in dribs and drabs of Allied soldiers caught in the Dunkirk pocket. This work, in memory of the success of Operation Dynamo, is also a tribute to the soldiers killed or missing in the period from May 26 to June 4, 1940. The Hourglass also symbolizes a possibility of reversal capable of transforming a defeat into victory .
