The transformation of the dreary landscape around the Ilmenau River into an attractive recreational area with abundant trees is primarily thanks to one man who wanted to spend his retirement in Lüneburg: Hermann Busse, the retired Royal Chief Forester.
At the age of 53, he retired and came to Lüneburg in 1881.
Instead of settling down, he founded a beautification society, having already recognized the potential of the beautiful natural surroundings of Lüneburg—including the still barren hills of Bockelsberg. He quickly found influential supporters for his idea of creating a park and recreational area there.
