The Nicolai Church is the oldest surviving building in the city. The original Romanesque church building, built in the middle of the 12th century, was destroyed by the Spanish in the Schmalkaldic War in 1547, but was rebuilt by Prince Wolfgang in 1564/65. The church suffered further damage during the Thirty Years' War. It was rebuilt between 1685 and 1702. That was when the church took on its current form. The tower was renovated in 1865 after fire damage in its upper section.

It is an elongated hall church with a steep gable roof. The large three-bay long choir and the missing apse date back to a conversion to a mendicant order church in the 13th century. The north wall has numerous doors, the small ones of which led to the private boxes of wealthy families. The largest door was the entrance to the box of the royal family.

The slightly pointed-arched, three-tiered main portal dates from the Gothic period. It is over 6 meters high. The columns on either side of the entrance door have capitals with buds and leaf ornaments.
