Square and walled mounds are a sure indication of Roman burial sites. The wall is part of a grave complex, the so-called grave gardens. In research, smaller burial areas that are bordered by a square or rectangular ditch are referred to as burial gardens. A horticultural design of the burial gardens cannot be proven archaeologically, but is mentioned in the written sources for Roman burials in the Italian region. Burial gardens were laid out as early as Celtic times, they are an expression of Celtic-Roman funerary customs.
