Aalst's Grote Markt (main square) boasts the neoclassical town hall, built around 1830 by architect Louis Roelandt. Behind the ornate façade bearing the city's coat of arms lies the spacious city banquet hall, while the rococo-style buildings of the former manor house are situated around the courtyard. A striking feature is the elaborate clock gable with a sundial and oculus, flanked by the memorial to those who fell in 1830 and the bronze statue of Ondineke, the protagonist of Louis Paul Boon's novel "De Kapellekensbaan" (The Chapel Road).
