Gate built in 1685 to strengthen the city's defense system. It was then called 'Porta di Mare'. The gate is now considered a symbol of the historic center of the city, and has been called 'Porta Garibaldi' since 1860. Above the arch is the Latin inscription 'Dominus custodiat introitu et exitu tuum' (the Lord guards your entrance and exit). Interestingly, in 1961, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the unification of Italy, the cyclists participating in the Giro d'Italia rode at the gate (Marsala-Palermo stage: 144 km (89 miles).
