The church was built in 1826-1829 under the supervision of the Ministry of Water Management according to a design by the architects J. Backx and T.W. Conrad. The building replaced the demolished church building from around 1600. Originally there was a medieval church on this site that was burned down in 1595, during the Eighty Years' War.
