The Royal Mosque (Xhamia e Mbretit/Xhamia Mbret) is considered the oldest preserved mosque in the country. The mosque, built at the end of the 15th century, is located in the old town within the fortress walls. Since 1948 it has been one of Albania's cultural monuments.
The exact origin of the mosque is not known. The Islamic art historian Machiel Kiel links the foundation of the mosque to the activities of Sinan Pasha Borovinic to rebuild Elbasan and suspects that the building dates from the late 15th century or perhaps the early 16th century.
