The development on the Schiessplatzheide ran very differently: the former forest area was cleared in 1880 to create a shooting range. Rare alpine, continental and sub-Mediterranean animal and plant species were able to settle on the now free area. Due to the military use, initially as a parade ground, the area was kept free again and again. After the Second World War, the firing range was used by American troops for target practice. The shooting range has not been used by the military since around 1980 and is now a "case for nature conservation".

Vandring

The Schießplatzheide in the Augsburg city forest is an important nature reserve and the largest contiguous heath complex in the region. With its unique biodiversity, it is one of the most valuable dry habitats in southern Bavaria.

History:
The area originally served as a military shooting range since 1886, used by various armies, including those of the German Empire, the Nazi regime, the US Army and most recently the German Army. Military operations were only stopped in 1983 and nature began to reclaim the area.

Heathland in Augsburg's City Forest

The area was used as a shooting range for almost 100 years. Today, it is home to one of the largest contiguous recreational areas south of Augsburg.
Large parts are protected or are being rehabilitated to restore the floodplains and streams in the city forest.
