The monastery church of St. Vitus, lying on a slight hill, was consecrated in 940 by Abbot Volkmar I from Corvey. From the beginning to around the middle of the 12th century, today's church was rebuilt as a Romanesque three-aisled flat-ceiling basilica in the Hirsau architectural style. Saint Vitus or Veit, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, received patronage.

The former Benedictine monastery in present-day Gröningen was founded in 936. The associated church was consecrated four years later by representatives of Corvey Abbey, a significant institution of the Benedictine Order at the time, which produced several notable bishops.
In 1550, the monastery was dissolved and subsequently became the property of the city of Gröningen.
Unfortunately, the church can currently only be viewed from the outside.
