This palace (you see only the entrance here) was built by the father of Constantijn and Christiaan Huygens. Constantijn Huygens (elder of the two) inherited it. Constantijn was a politician but also a scientist he was the secretary and advisor of William of Orange that together with his wife Mary, became King and Queen of England (William and Mary).

Constantijn Huygens had a house built on the Vliet where he regularly withdrew. The house and the accompanying garden were designed by Huygens and Jacob van Campen. Pieter Post led the construction from 1639, Hofwijck was festively opened in 1642. In 1653 Huygens described his country estate in the poem Hofwijck.

The design of Hofwijck's garden was based on the human body. The house was the head, the avenues were the poor, and the orchard the belly. The lower body disappeared when Voorburg station was built in 1870, on the railway line from Gouda to The Hague. Much later, the A12 was also constructed right next to the railway, across the original estate.
