The well-known history of the city of Myra, which is now called Demre, begins in the 6th century BC and was characterized by maritime trade. Later, Myra was one of the six largest in the Lycian League. The town was a bishop's seat early on and the most famous bishop of Myra, Saint Nicholas, is also considered the patron saint of sailors.
