Karl Mehner (1856 to 1932) served as a model for the sculpture. Karl Mehner was a miner like his ancestors. The sculptor Julius Hermann Karl Ludwig Gotenschweg (1889 to 1947) had an order to create a miner's memorial for the trade exhibition in Freiberg in 1912. Usually a well-sized monument is prepared using a small scale model. The name Gotenschweg is on the base of the plaster model that was added to the Freiberg City and Mining Museum in 2001. It is more than obvious that this is the model of the (today's Brander) monument!
