A part of the city, the former Neu-Malchow, lies picturesquely on an island between the Malchower, the Plauer and the Fleesensee. The island is connected to the mainland by an earthen causeway (raised in 1846) and a swing bridge. This area received Schwerin city rights in 1235.
From the earth embankment you have fantastic views of the old town and the monastery.
