This colossal, unfinished statue of white Naxian marble, measuring around 4.7 to 5.5 meters long and weighing between 5 and 7 tonnes, offers a unique window into ancient Greek sculptural practices. This is one of the most beautifully preserved youth statues on Náxos that has been lying there like an enchanted prince for 2500 years. The statue is about 6 m high and was struck in the former marble quarries of Flerío. Probably because the right leg broke off, the statue was never completed and left there in its raw form.

At the village of Melanes, the route leads over dusty tracks through the steep hills to the parking lot at the old marble quarries of Melanes. There, in the middle of the grove, is the unfinished white marble statue called the Kouros of Flerio, which is a good 5m tall. From this place a wonderful climb leads towards Potamia through beautifully blooming gorse, clove and thyme bushes up the mountain to another unfinished statue of a Kouros by Flerio.

    Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What is the typical duration needed to visit the Kouros of Flerio and its surroundings?

Most visitors find that 1 to 2 hours is sufficient to explore the main Kouros in the village garden and take the short uphill walk to the second Kouros in the ancient quarry. This allows time to appreciate the statues, read the informational signs, and enjoy the serene natural setting.

Is the Kouros of Flerio site accessible for families with young children or those with limited mobility?

The main Kouros in the village garden is relatively easy to access. However, reaching the second Kouros, sometimes called the "Kouros of Faragi," involves a short uphill walk over uneven terrain and dusty tracks. While many families enjoy the adventure, those with very young children or individuals with limited mobility might find the path to the second statue challenging. Strollers are not recommended for the path to the second Kouros.

Are there specific hiking trails or circular walks around the Kouros of Flerio?

Yes, the area around the Kouros of Flerio is excellent for walking and offers several trails. A popular option is the circular walk that connects the two Kouroi, passing through olive groves and the ancient quarry. There are also routes that extend towards Potamia, offering pleasant climbs through blooming gorse, clove, and thyme bushes. These trails provide a deeper immersion into the Naxian landscape.

What are the parking options and public transport availability for visiting the Kouros of Flerio?

Parking is available near the old marble quarries of Melanes, close to the main Kouros. It's generally recommended to arrive earlier in the day, especially during peak season, as spaces can fill up. Public transport to this rural area is limited; while there might be local bus services to Melanes, they are infrequent. Renting a car or scooter is often the most convenient way to reach the site.

Is the Kouros of Flerio site dog-friendly?

Generally, the outdoor nature of the site makes it dog-friendly, especially for well-behaved dogs on a leash. The paths through the olive groves and to the second Kouros are suitable for walks with your canine companion. Always ensure you clean up after your pet to maintain the cleanliness and serenity of this historical location.

What should visitors wear or bring when exploring the Kouros of Flerio?

Given the rural setting and potential for walking on uneven paths, comfortable, sturdy footwear is highly recommended. During warmer months, light clothing, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are advisable. Bringing water is also a good idea, as amenities directly at the site are limited. For cooler seasons, layers are best.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options near the Kouros of Flerio?

The Kouros of Flerio is located near the small village of Melanes, which offers a few traditional tavernas where you can enjoy local Naxian cuisine. For more extensive options regarding cafes, restaurants, and accommodation, you would need to head towards Naxos Town (Chora), which is about 10 km away, or other larger villages on the island.

What makes the Kouros of Flerio significant for someone new to ancient Greek history?

The Kouros of Flerio offers a unique and tangible introduction to ancient Greek history because it's an unfinished statue still in its original quarry setting. This allows visitors to directly witness the raw stages of monumental sculpture from the Archaic period (7th-6th centuries BC). It provides a rare glimpse into the challenges and craftsmanship of ancient artisans, making the history feel incredibly immediate and real, rather than just seeing a finished piece in a museum.

Are there other ancient sites or 'hidden gems' to explore near the Kouros of Flerio?

Yes, the area around Melanes and Flerio is rich in history. Besides the two Kouroi, you can find remnants of an ancient sanctuary dating back to the 8th century BC, as well as traces of ancient quarrying tools and semi-finished marble blocks. Exploring the surrounding olive groves and hills can reveal more insights into Naxos's ancient marble industry and rural life.

How does the Kouros of Flerio compare to the Kouros of Apollonas, and which one should I visit?

Both are colossal, unfinished Kouroi on Naxos, but they offer different experiences. The Kouros of Flerio (4.7-5.5 meters) is located in a serene garden setting near Melanes, with a second Kouros nearby in an ancient quarry. The Kouros of Apollonas (10.45 meters) is significantly larger and lies in a more remote, dramatic quarry setting near the village of Apollonas. If you're interested in seeing the process of ancient quarrying and a more accessible, tranquil site, Flerio is excellent. If sheer scale and a more rugged, remote experience are your priority, Apollonas might be preferred. Many visitors enjoy seeing both to appreciate the scope of Naxian marble artistry.

Is the Kouros of Flerio suitable for a winter visit, and what are the weather conditions like?

Visiting the Kouros of Flerio in winter can be a peaceful experience, with fewer crowds. Naxos winters are generally mild, but you can expect cooler temperatures, occasional rain, and stronger winds. The landscape will be greener, but the blooming gorse and thyme seen in spring will be absent. Ensure you wear warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes, as paths can be muddy. Always check the local weather forecast before your visit.
