The Schenkenburg ruin is the landmark of Schenkenzell. It is one of the oldest castles in the Kinzig valley. The former inhabitants of the castle were the taverns of Zell, hence the name of the castle and the name Schenkenzell.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the Schenken zu Zell, who also gave the town its name.
