Schöneck was built around 1200 by the Reichsministerialen Konrad von Boppard as an imperial castle. His descendants were called Knights of Schöneck and lived in the castle until their extinction in 1508. The family consisted of several lines that lived together at the castle (Ganerbenburg). The Gallscheid court was also administered from Schöneck.
In the Eltzer feud 1331-1336, the castle was part of the protection and defensive alliance against the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg. The castle came to Kurtrier as a fief in 1354.
