The nave of the small Romanesque basilica of St. Martinus was built in the 11th century on an older burial ground. According to Paul Clemen, the number 1146 is said to have been named as the year of construction in an inscription in the southern aisle. The west tower was added in the middle of the 12th century, and the side aisles and the choir apse at the end of the 12th century. In the liber valoris, the church was mentioned around 1300 in connection with the parish church in Willich under a pastor.
