The present church stands where the monastery once stood. Friedrich von Sparneck, the monastery's founder, was buried here as early as 1477. The church at Sparneck was not very large and probably had a wooden tower on the roof. It only attained its present dimensions in 1695. The old monastery church now forms the choir of the enlarged church.
A devastating fire largely destroyed the church on May 5, 1845. Reconstruction dragged on until 1861 and gave the church its present neo-Gothic appearance.

The development of the church was closely related to the foundation of the Sparneck monastery. Friedrich von Sparneck was buried in the church as the founder of the monastery as early as 1477. The former monastery church forms today's chancel, the nave was added later. From this time a sacrament house has been preserved as a niche in the choir room. From the late Gothic period there are frescoes depicting Saints Catherine and Barbara, which were whitewashed again after their exposure in 1932.
