    In 1893 Fridjof Nansen set out from Vardø with the ship "Fram" for the North Pole. For the 100th anniversary, the Fridjof Nansen-plass was dedicated to him on the Kaigata and the artist Per Ung created the proud bronze monument of the polar explorer.
