"The Rhine Valley around Boppard can rightly be called the Valley of the Kings, because there is no other river where so many castles, palaces and fortresses are concentrated in a short distance Directly on the banks of the Rhine. However, it was founded as early as 1265 by Richard of Cornwall, who laid the foundation stone for the mighty keep here. After Boppard was pledged to Archbishop Baldwin of Luxembourg in Trier in 1312, construction work was suspended for some time the keep could be expanded.

The Electoral Castle, also known as the Old Castle, is a high medieval castle in Boppard in Rhineland-Palatinate and was part of the medieval city fortifications of Boppard. It was a lowland and moated castle. After Boppard was pledged to the Electorate of Trier, it became the property of Baldwin of Luxembourg. The castle is also named Baldwinsburg after him. Historians originally assumed that Baldwin of Luxembourg was the first to start building the castle. By the 17th century, the castle had been expanded into a four-wing complex by the Electors of Trier.
