The plans for the market hall were drawn up by the architect José María López-Dóriga. Construction began in 1839 and was completed in 1842. It covers two streets of the newly built city extension, known in Spanish as Ensanche. This new market had become necessary due to the increasing population and relieved the pressure on the existing Mercado de la Esperanza market.
