Modeled after the giant egg of a tern, the Tji Bird Observatory is nested in a willow twig nest in the Haringvliet Nature Reserve. Behind the cracks in the egg lies a vast cavity made of artfully crafted wooden struts, from where you can observe the diverse birdlife of the Haringvliet in all directions. A truly exceptional place.

On the edge of the Haringvliet is a special bird observatory. It is shaped like an egg of the sandwich tern. But then 8 meters high and 11 meters long! And you have a 360 degree view over a colony of sandwich terns, but also the vast Haringvliet and the Haringvliet locks.

What is the typical duration for a visit to the Tij Bird Observatory?

Most visitors spend between 1 to 2 hours at the Tij Bird Observatory. This allows ample time to walk to the observatory, explore its unique architecture, utilize the provided telescope for birdwatching, and enjoy the panoramic views from the spiral staircase. If you plan to combine your visit with longer walks in the surrounding Scheelhoek nature reserve, your visit could extend to several hours.

Are there specific walking routes or loop trails around the Tij Bird Observatory?

Yes, the Scheelhoek nature reserve, where the Tij Bird Observatory is located, offers several walking routes. These trails vary in length and provide opportunities to explore the diverse landscape beyond the observatory itself. While the intro mentions general walking routes, you can find specific loop trails that allow for a more extensive exploration of the area's natural beauty and additional birdwatching spots.

Is the Tij Bird Observatory wheelchair accessible?

Access to the Tij Bird Observatory involves a walk along a path and through a sand-covered tunnel. While the terrain is generally flat and easy, the path and tunnel surfaces might present challenges for some wheelchairs. The observatory itself has an iron spiral staircase leading to the upper vantage point, which is not wheelchair accessible. It's advisable to check current conditions or contact local visitor information for specific accessibility details.

Is the Tij Bird Observatory and its surrounding area dog-friendly?

While the Scheelhoek nature reserve is a beautiful area for walks, dogs are generally not permitted inside the Tij Bird Observatory itself due to the sensitive nature of the bird sanctuary. For walks in the surrounding reserve, policies can vary, but often dogs must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. It's best to check local signage or official reserve guidelines before bringing your dog.

What kind of wildlife, beyond birds, can be spotted at Tij Bird Observatory?

While the observatory is primarily for birdwatching, the rich ecosystem of the Scheelhoek nature reserve supports other wildlife. Depending on the season, you might spot various insects, butterflies, and small mammals. The opening of the Haringvliet sluices has also improved water quality, potentially attracting more diverse aquatic life, though these are less directly observable from the observatory.

What are the best times of year to visit for specific bird species?

While spring and summer offer peak activity with nesting birds like common terns and sandwich terns, other seasons have their highlights. Autumn brings migrating birds, offering a chance to see different species passing through. Winter can be excellent for observing various ducks, geese, and raptors. Eurasian spoonbills and egrets are often present during warmer months. The specific species you'll see can vary greatly with the season and even the tide.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options near the Tij Bird Observatory?

The Tij Bird Observatory is located within a nature reserve, so there are no immediate cafes or restaurants on site. However, the nearby town of Stellendam offers various dining options and some accommodation choices. For a wider selection, you can explore other towns on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. It's recommended to bring your own refreshments for your visit to the observatory.

How can I reach the Tij Bird Observatory using public transport?

Reaching the Tij Bird Observatory by public transport can be challenging as it's situated in a nature reserve. The closest major public transport hubs would likely be in Stellendam or other nearby towns, from which you might need to take a taxi or walk a significant distance. Driving or cycling is generally the most convenient way to access the observatory. Always check current public transport schedules and routes before planning your trip.

What should I wear when visiting Tij Bird Observatory, especially in autumn?

Given its location near the water, the weather can be quite variable and windy. In autumn, it's advisable to dress in layers. A windproof and waterproof jacket is highly recommended, along with warm clothing, a hat, and gloves. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are essential for the path to the observatory and any additional walks in the reserve. Even in summer, a light jacket can be useful due to the coastal breeze.

What makes the architectural design of the Tij Bird Observatory so special?

The observatory's design is remarkable for its sustainable and circular approach. It mimics a giant Sandwich Tern egg, constructed from natural and reclaimed materials like Accoya wood, pine, and local reeds. The lower section can submerge during high water, and the entire structure was parametrically designed for on-site assembly and is fully dismountable, emphasizing reusability. The access tunnel also provides artificial nesting holes for sand martins, blending functionality with ecological purpose.

Are there any other notable viewpoints or natural features near the observatory?

Beyond the observatory itself, the surrounding Scheelhoek nature reserve offers several natural features and potential viewpoints. The Haringvliet sluices, a significant engineering marvel, are visible from the observatory's upper vantage point. The reserve's diverse landscape includes wetlands, reed beds, and open water, providing various spots for nature observation and photography. Exploring the walking trails will lead you to different perspectives of this dynamic delta environment.
