Partly smart, some stupid, but in any case disrespectful and extremely quick-witted. Tünnes and Schälel are still good for dozens of jokes today.

Tünnes and Schäl are as much a part of Cologne as Kölsch beer and Carnival. They are caricatures of the petit-bourgeois city dweller and the farmer who has just moved to Cologne from the countryside. Sometimes clever, sometimes foolish, but always irreverent and extremely quick-witted. Even today, Tünnes and Schäl are good for dozens of jokes in Carnival speeches.
