The Braunschweig Ostbahnhof was originally located on the site of today's main train station and its grounds.
This was opened in 1871, initially called St. Leonhard station and then renamed on August 1, 1889.
The Ostbahnhof was mainly used for freight traffic and for shunting.
Expanded over the years due to the increasing traffic.

Vandring
The Braunschweig main station, located 1.6 kilometers southeast of downtown Braunschweig, was opened on 1 October 1960. The intersection station with 8 platform tracks is one of the more than 80 stations of the second highest station category 2 of DB Station & Service and replaced the late Classicist Old Station, a terminal station south of the old town. As an example of modern architecture of the 1950s, the reception building is a listed building.
