Bivacco Cecilia Genisio

The Bivacco Cecilia Genisio is an unmanaged hut, always open, providing basic shelter. It is equipped with 12 beds, complete with mattresses and blankets. Approximately 150 meters from the bivouac, a water source is accessible, with a second, smaller one slightly further away. There are no cooking facilities, electricity, or staff.

While some sources might state around 2,230 meters, the inscription above the entrance to the bivouac itself indicates an altitude of 2,233 meters above sea level. It is located in the Alpe Vailet, within the Vassola Valley.

The hike to Bivacco Cecilia Genisio is generally considered challenging, with significant elevation gain (1000m from Vonzo, 1350m from Chialamberto) and stony terrain. It also involves crossing the Vassola stream via fixed ropes. From Vonzo, it's about 1000 meters of elevation gain, taking roughly 2 hours 45 minutes. Both routes are classified as 'E' (Excursionist) difficulty, meaning they are challenging hikes on marked trails, requiring good physical fitness. The terrain can be stony, and the route from Vonzo includes a fixed-rope crossing over the Vassola stream.

Trailheads for the bivouac are located in the municipalities of Chialamberto and Vonzo. Hikers typically park in these villages before starting their ascent. Specific parking areas are usually available within or at the edge of these towns, but it's advisable to check local signage upon arrival, especially during peak season, as spaces can be limited.

Generally, dogs are permitted on hiking trails in the Italian Alps, provided they are kept under control, preferably on a leash, and owners clean up after them. Given the challenging terrain and the presence of wildlife, ensuring your dog is well-behaved and physically capable of the strenuous hike is important. The bivouac is dedicated to Cecilia Genisio, a highly active member and former president of the Rivarolo Canavese section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). She was instrumental in promoting mountaineering, organizing numerous hiking trips, and contributing to trail mapping and refuge oversight. Notably, she initiated the Alta Via Canavesana, and the bivouac itself was built through a regional tender for long-distance trails, with interior furnishings funded by CAI sections.

Chialamberto and nearby villages in the Lanzo Valleys offer various local amenities. While the bivouac itself is unmanaged and remote, you can typically find small cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses or B&Bs in the valley towns. These provide options for meals and overnight stays before or after your challenging hike to Bivacco Cecilia Genisio.

During this period, snow has usually melted from the trails, and the weather is generally more stable. The valley is also vibrant with waterfalls and streams. Visiting outside this window, especially in winter, requires specialized equipment and experience due to snow and ice.
