This is a fine example of a front door. This is the door that allowed access to the outer wall of the defences. It would probabaly have house a guard post.

The Porte du Croux had both a defensive and a commercial role, as it collected taxes on products entering the city of Nevers. Its presence was attested as early as 1194, but it was rebuilt between 1394 and 1398 in its present form. A front door was added, a few meters away, in 1422.
