Cykling

In 1867, the Central European Degree Measurement Commission, founded in 1862, was expanded to include European degree measurement and represents the forerunner of the international geodetic union (1919).
In Dangast on the dike there is such a "Gauss stone", which was roofed over according to historical specifications. The stone was erected here in 1866 and from here you could sight the church towers of Varel and Jever.
In the immediate vicinity, a round sticker "Central European degree measurement - Dangast station" was left in the asphalt.
TIP for surveyors / geodesists. 😉

From the astronomical station in 1866, with the assistance of the land registry office of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, measurements to determine the surface and shape of the earth were carried out.

The original location is marked by a plaque in the street.

A stone with a partly legible inscription recalls an old survey point from which degree measurements of the earth's surface were determined and calculated.
The stone was even built to protect a wooden projection!
A metal information board next to it reveals knowledge value & information.
