The history of Wyk harbor began several hundred years ago. The first existing and verifiable records about Wyk harbor show the awarding of the so-called "harbor rights" on October 31, 1704. The harbor offers a very diverse infrastructure in a relatively small area. It is primarily characterized by the year-round ferry service between the mainland and the island of Amrum.

The port authority is a municipal authority of the town of Wyk auf Föhr. According to the operating statutes of November 17, 2000, the purpose of the municipal authority is to operate and maintain the port facilities as well as to rent and lease the municipal properties and other facilities belonging to the port. The municipal authority also constructs and operates a wind turbine, a car and boat washing area, operates green buildings (a construction yard and a garden center), manages the beach and maintains the townscape.
