Great views on a not that easy way. You should already have Alpine experience here. It is easier via the Obersee to the Rautispitz for (almost) the same view.

From the ridge, only a few meters to reach the Rautispitz. The route to Wiggis should only be taken by well-practiced and vertigo-free hikers - sometimes it goes along the vertical sloping rock face.

The hike along the ridge between Rautispitz and Wiggis is considered demanding and difficult, typically rated T3-T4. It requires excellent physical condition, sure-footedness, and a good head for heights. Sections, especially towards Wiggis and the Geisschappel, are exposed and feature chains to assist climbers. Hikers consistently advise having prior alpine experience.

Are there any less challenging alternatives to experience similar views?

Yes, for those seeking a less arduous experience with similar panoramic views, a popular alternative is to hike directly to Rautispitz from Obersee. This route is generally considered easier than traversing the full ridge to Wiggis, offering much of the same sensational scenery without the most exposed sections.

What specific sections of the ridge hike are most challenging or exposed?

The traverse to Wiggis is particularly arduous and exposed, with sections along vertical sloping rock faces. The path between the two peaks can be narrow and slippery. Key sections like the Geisschappel and the ascent to Wiggis are secured with chains, indicating their challenging nature. This part of the route is recommended only for well-practiced and vertigo-free hikers.

Can the ridge hike be undertaken in winter?

No, the ridge hike between Rautispitz and Wiggis is not suitable for winter hiking. Residual snow can persist until June, making certain parts impassable and extremely dangerous due to exposure and slippery conditions. It is crucial to check weather and snow conditions thoroughly, as the traverse to Wiggis should not be attempted if there is any snow.

What are the parking options for accessing the viewpoint?

Access to the area for hiking typically begins from the Obersee, which can be reached via Näfels. There is parking available at Obersee. However, be aware that the Oberseestrasse leading to it is narrow and winding, often requiring vehicles driving uphill to have priority. Parking can fill up quickly during peak season.

Is public transport available to reach the starting point of the hike?

Yes, public transport can get you close to the starting point. You can take a bus from Näfels or Mollis to Obersee Glarus. It's advisable to check the current bus schedules, especially for weekend or off-season travel, as services might be less frequent.

Are there any permits required for hiking the Rautispitz Wiggis ridge?

No, there are no specific permits required for hiking the Rautispitz Wiggis ridge or in the surrounding Glarus region of Switzerland for recreational purposes. However, hikers are expected to respect local regulations, private property, and environmental protection guidelines.

Is the View from the Ridge Between Rautispitz and Wiggis suitable for families or children?

The main ridge hike between Rautispitz and Wiggis is not suitable for families with young children due to its demanding nature, exposure, and T3-T4 difficulty. For the ridge itself, children would need to be experienced alpine hikers with excellent sure-footedness and no fear of heights.

Are dogs allowed on the trails to the Rautispitz Wiggis ridge?

Generally, dogs are allowed on hiking trails in Switzerland, but for the Rautispitz Wiggis ridge, it's important to consider the extreme difficulty and exposed sections. The narrow paths, chains, and vertical rock faces make it highly challenging and potentially unsafe for dogs, especially larger breeds or those not accustomed to alpine terrain. It's best to leave dogs at home for this particular ridge traverse.

What kind of geological features can be observed along the ridge?

The ridge offers interesting geological insights. Wiggis is primarily composed of Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones. As you traverse towards Rautispitz, the rock characteristics change, revealing distinctly white, brittle, and shaly rock. These formations contribute to the unique and rugged character of the landscape.

What should I pack for the Rautispitz Wiggis ridge trail?

Given the challenging alpine nature, essential packing includes sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, weather-appropriate layers (even in summer), rain gear, sufficient water and snacks, a first-aid kit, a map and compass or GPS device, and sun protection. Due to exposed sections, a helmet is also advisable for added safety, especially if continuing to Wiggis.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options nearby?

Yes, near the Obersee, which is a common starting point, you can find the Berghotel Obersee, offering amenities including accommodation and dining. Additionally, in the nearby towns of Näfels and Mollis, you will find a wider selection of restaurants and various accommodation options to suit different preferences.
