The castle, 3 km east of Schweinfurt, was first mentioned in a document in 1245. It once belonged to the Hennebergers, one of the most distinguished Franconian families. The prince bishops of Würzburg later secured the walls. At present, however, the further fate is uncertain. In order to preserve the endangered castle for future generations, considerable investments are necessary. The castle is above the village bordering on vineyards in an idyllic location above the Main valley.

Mainberg Castle is, at least from a distance, an eye-catcher over the town and the valley of the Main. Seen up close, the structural decay becomes very clear. The decades as a building speculation object are unmistakable.

The keep may go back to the 13th century, large parts of the four-wing castle complex were built in the Gothic style. The gate construction is much younger from the 16./17. Century. Externally, however, it is primarily the historicizing renovation of the 19th century that characterizes it.
