Cykling

The Belfry of Tournai is the oldest belfry in Belgium, built in 1188. The belfry was erected after the French King Philip Augustus granted the city the right to ring bells, which allowed them to build a belfry.

The belfry is 72 meters high and dominates the Grand-Place of Tournai. It served various functions throughout the centuries, including watchtower, prison, bell tower, and town hall. The bell, known as the “Bancloque”, was used to warn the population of important events such as fires, invasions, and executions.
