During his tour (49-50 AD) in Asia Minor (second phase of the apostolic tour) a Macedonian man is said to have asked the apostle Paul (Shaul) in a vision: "Come over to Macedonia and help us."
He is said to have landed on European soil in Neapolis for the first time. From here he went to Philippi (via the old via Egnatia) to explain his Jewish belief in the one God and the messianic experience. At this point of the landing, where Shaul / Paulus took his first steps into the city of Kavala, there is a monument.
