Richly decorated Baroque facades characterize the streetscape of Marienstrasse south of the Protestant St. Mary's Church, directly adjacent to the town hall.
In 1715, parts of the old town were destroyed by a city fire. Johann Christoph Schütze, the ducal master builder since 1718, was commissioned to construct new buildings, including those for high-ranking members of the ducal court, such as the government secretary Andreas Benjamin Praetorius, and for the merchant Johann Michael Heyne.
Today, these buildings house the expanded town hall complex and the city administration.
