The climb to the "Old Castle" is quite steep, along a natural path that should only be attempted in dry weather. After rainfall, it should only be attempted with appropriate caution.

A very steep section of the trail leads up from the bottom to Harchenburg Castle. Roots help you keep your footing. Going downhill is very slippery in wet weather.
This path is also a mountain bike trail, so be careful...

Harchenburg Castle, also known colloquially as the "Old Castle," was a wooden castle. Surrounded by a circular wall of stone and earth, it provided additional protection for the lords and those under its protection. It was built around the end of the 13th century, but documented until 1444. Why the castle fell into disrepair remains unclear to this day. Locals believe it was caused by a fire.
