After the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), one of the worst health problems was leprosy, so it was decided in 1943 to build Abades. Here a hospital for lepers and a crematorium should develop, because one believed that the infection would be prevented only by isolation, the favorable climatic conditions and the removal far away from the population centers, thus. The sanatorium never finished, Abades counted a total of 197 patients, and after no more need existed it was used for military purposes (combat training).

In the south of Tenerife you will find the "Sanatori de Abona". The place, which is located on a hill above Abades, was once intended to be a leper colony where sick people could be treated and isolated from the outside world. The station was planned in 1943 - construction work began in the same year. Thanks to new and innovative treatment methods, leprosy was defeated in the Canary Islands
