The Brissago Islands form the Botanical Garden of the Canton of Ticino. The smaller island (or Isola di Sant'Apollinare) is covered by spontaneous vegetation, mainly of Insubrian origin, which is left in its natural state. On the Isola Grande (or Isola di San Pancrazio), which has been open to the public since 1950, plants of subtropical origin from the northern and southern hemispheres have been planted. In 1885, Baroness Antoinette Saint-Léger chose the islands as her residence and often invited painters, sculptors, musicians and writers. The large island became an exotic garden.

Vandring
The climate of the islands is mild and pleasant, with no major fluctuations in temperature thanks to the protection of the Alps and the heat storage in Lake Maggiore. This allows the planting of Mediterranean and subtropical plants. The temperature rarely drops below 0 ° C.
There are around 1700 species in the botanical garden on the Big Island
The planted species come from the regions with a Mediterranean climate (Mediterranean area, Chile, South Africa, South and West Australia, California) and from the zones with a humid tropical climate (especially Asia, but also North and South America and Oceania).
