The rose garden is a beautifully landscaped garden area directly between the magnificent buildings of the Karl-Marx-Allee. If you sit here on a bench under the leaves, you can hardly imagine that here began the GDR popular uprising on June 17, 1953. The workers on the construction site of Karl-Marx-Allee began strikes at that time, when without warning the labor standards were increased. From here, the protests spread first across Berlin and then across the entire GDR. A small plaque commemorates the uprising and the 55 people killed in the crackdown by the GDR leadership and the allied Soviet forces.
