Mitcheldean, on the northern fringes of the Forest of Dean, is characterised by old timbered houses and narrow streets. It is a good base for many marvellous hikes in the ancient woodland.
Legend has it that St Anthony's Well, about a mile to the south of the village, has magical powers. The curative effects of its icy cold waters were championed by the monks of Flaxley Abbey, who claimed it as a remedy for skin disease.
