The name Verhildersum is a corruption of 'Vrouw Hildert's Heem'. We do not know exactly who this Woman Hildert was, however. Like the Menkemaborg and the Fraeylemaborg, Verhildersum was originally a stone house. Until the Eighty Years' War, the Onsta family was the owner: groningerborgen.nl/borg/?cg%5Boid%5D=885&cHash=8677b97a6637d2b6380aaee77b826bb1

Paths within the estate are generally well-maintained, making for easy walking. This gentle landscape is suitable for leisurely strolls and accessible for most visitors.

Is Landgoed Verhildersum accessible for wheelchairs or strollers?

The outdoor grounds, gardens, and many paths around Landgoed Verhildersum are generally accessible for wheelchairs and strollers due to the flat terrain. However, access to the interiors of the historical buildings (the 14th-century borg, museum farm, and workers' cottage) might be limited due to their historical nature, including narrow doorways or steps. It's advisable to contact the estate directly for specific accessibility information regarding indoor exhibits.

Are there cafes or restaurants on or near the estate?

Yes, there is a nice restaurant or museum café located on the estate itself, offering a pleasant spot for refreshments. Additionally, the nearby town of Leens may offer further options for cafes and pubs if you wish to explore beyond the estate's offerings.
